Image
On a night that honored those who have perished seeking a better life, it seemed that their spirits were present. Linn-Benton’s Hostile Terrain exhibit reopened to students and faculty in a ceremony that included a moving information session and a native dancing ceremony in the January night. Professors Anne Magratten and Lauren Visconti opened the ceremony by welcoming guests to Room 103 of Linn-Benton’s Calapooia Center in a room with four long tables housing about 20 people. The guests found themselves surrounded by large projector screens on three sides of the room and about a dozen additional people sat along the walls in chairs provided by the faculty. After this, Visconti introduced the guest speaker, Perla Torres. Torres is the Colibri Family Network 's director. She immigrated to the United States in 1999 with her family and studied at the University of Arizona, focusing on immigration law reforms and justice for migrants as a psychology and pre-law major. Men's and Women's Basketball Teams both Fall on the Road at Clackamas

Image
While it is shaping up to be an incredible season for Linn-Benton basketball, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams hit a stumbling block on the road at Clackamas Community College on Wednesay, January 23.  The men’s team kept it competitive in the first half, keeping the game tied at 45, before falling behind in the second half as the contest ended with a score of 97-89 in favor of the Cougars. This brought the Men’s basketball team to a record of  8-10, though still sporting a winning record of 3-2 in NWAC conference play.  While home field advantage proved too much to overcome for the Roadrunners, several players played excellent basketball, including #1 Tyson Parker, who scored 27 points while connecting on nine of 13 attempts and making seven of eight free throws. #5 Ayden Foster collected 11 rebounds, and #44 TJ Zimmermann contributed 24 points on nine of 20 shooting and making 5-6 free throws.  The difference for the men’s team appears to have been partly in block, of wh

Dr. Ivory Toldson Speaks at LBCC

Image
Linn-Benton Community College always seems to grow. Whether it be through its enrollment or the programs that it offers, the half a century that the campus has been serving students has seen persons from around the world and of many races attend classes and find their futures. It was on Jan. 11 that the college added another person and moment to its history of diversity and inclusion: Dr. Ivory Toldson. A professor at Howard University, Toldson arrived on campus to discuss academic access for persons of color, along with the travails and triumphs that they find in the United States campus scene, both past and present, so that we might all improve upon the future. In Forum 115, some 20 persons gathered to hear Toldson share both anecdotal and academic descriptions of the lives that young African-American men and women live, and the circumstances that they bring with them when they arrive on college campuses, be they financial or social. Sharing statistics about college completion and de

New Term, New Class

TOPIC 1: ABOUT YOU -- Who's who in JN216-News Reporting this term: What prompted you to enroll in this course? I chose to take this course to expand my skills in journalism and build upon my ability to write articles and report news, seeing as I took the photojournalism class in the previous term and developed my abilities to articulate events and happenings in the form of photos and the explanations that accompany them. I found it all-too appropriate to continue my success in the field of journalism by adding to my repertoire with news reporting. I am hoping to continue to make contributions to the Linn-Benton Commuter. I also want to participate in a cooperative work experience project in the future, perhaps the spring, and become a professional journalist. This is all part of the concept of storytelling, whether it be fiction, non-fiction, or news;  I am hoping that I can get a degree in photojournalism and pursue professional credentials in the field. My fantastic experience i
