Women’s Basketball Team Falls to #1 Lane at Home

 


Albany, Oregon – The #4 Linn-Benton Women’s Basketball team lost its second consecutive game on Wednesday, Jan. 25 against the #1 ranked Lane Community College. 

Linn-Benton entered the game sporting a 14-2 record (4-1 in conference play) while the Titans entered undefeated at 18-0 (5-0 conference). It was a promising performance against the top-ranked team in the NWAC and one that the team hopes to improve upon when the playoffs arrive.

The Roadrunners dominated the first half, making use of the home crowd and leading 34-22 while making 15-35 shot attempts. This compared favorably to Lane’s 10-39 shooting, and at one point the Beaks led by as much as 15 points. Brooklynn Hankwitz contributed 10 points in the first half while Sabrina Albee added 9 to the Roadrunners’ impressive start.

It was in the second half, however, when Lane showed why they are undefeated and a formidable team in any arena. The Titans improved their shooting in the second half, making 15-32 shots. They also played stifling defense, collecting 10 turnovers and holding the Beaks to 7-27 shooting in the second half. 

At the end of the game, Hankwitz was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points while teammate Albee added another 12. It was an encouraging, if not frustrating game for the Roadrunners who held a two-point lead against the top-ranked team in the NWAC. 

The Roadrunners will surely look at their successes in the game, such as recording 16 assists to the Titans’ 10, as well as out-rebounding the titans 45-44. LB’s 19 turnovers, in comparison to Lanes’ 13, allowed the Titans to attempt 72 shots to the Beaks’ 62. In a game with a score differential of 8 points, such was the difference. Lane was also able to connect on 6-17 three-point attempts to LB’s 3-17. Those nine points allowed Lane to win the game.

The Roadrunners’ record fell to 14-3, including (4-2 in conference play) while the Titan’s improved to 19-0, including 6-0 in the NWAC. 

In what was the only game this season in which the undefeated and #1 Titans trailed entering the fourth quarter or even at the half in this season, the Roadrunners’ will analyze the game and gain confidence knowing that they can compete with anyone.

The Roadrunners next play Saturday, Jan. 28 at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon at 2:00 p.m.

Journalism for Spring 2023 in Review

I was able to meet almost all of my goals for this term and progress my abilities in news writing significantly. My greatest accomplishment for the year, and not only the term, was my sports article format. My writing also became more concise as I was able to break large paragraphs into smaller ones as a habit. This allowed me to develop a precision in directing my storytelling that allowed me to explain multiple concepts successively.
