Women's Basketball Team Crushes Portland Panthers

Albany, Oregon – Both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams won their games on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Portland Community College.

In what was an absolutely dominant performance for the Women’s team, they crushed the Panthers 70-45. The Men’s team triumphed 84-73 in another incredible performance.

The Lady Roadrunner’s entered the game sporting a 14-3 record (4-2 in conference play), having lost their previous two games. The Panthers sought to defend their home court and 7-10 season and 2-5 conference records.

Returning to their winning ways, the beaks led 32-16 at the half, holding the Panthers to 6 of 26 shooting. Committing only two turnovers in the first half, the Roadrunners forced 8 from Portland, in addition to holding the Panthers to zero of eight shooting on three point attempts in the first half.

The second half of the game was more of the same, with Linn-Benton outscoring Portland 38 to 29, outperforming the Panthers with 18 rebounds in the second half to the Panthers’ 7. For the whole of the game, the difference was defense and rebounding, with Linn-Benton dominating the boards 51 to 31 and stymieing Portland into 1-16 on three point field goals.

Brooklyn Hankwitz led the team with 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting, with two rebounds and two assists to boot. She made all four of her free throws as well. Muriel Jones-Hoisington made four three point shots for 12 points on the night while also adding 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals to the stellar performance.

It was as commanding a victory as the Roadrunners could have hoped for following their loss to undefeated Lane. Continuing to play suffocating defense, collecting rebounds, and forcing turnovers as they did on this night will surely allow the Beaks to compete when the playoffs come around. The team won’t look ahead, however, instead focusing on preparing for their next game.

What’s Next

The Roadrunners next play Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Oregon at 5:30 p.m.
