Roadrunners Split Saturday Doubleheader vs. Storm



SALEM – The Roadrunners baseball team split a pair of games with the Chemeketa Storm on Saturday, April 15.

The Beaks won the first game by a score of 3-2 before losing the second with a reciprocal score of 3-2.

Improving their overall record to 20-12 over the past week, the Roadrunners recorded five consecutive wins over Chemeketa and Mt. Hood. This winning streak ended in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday with the loss to the Storm.

LB took advantage of errors in the first game to score 2 runs. The first game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning after Titus Dumitru singled and then Trey Nelson doubled, allowing Dumitru to head for home. Nelson then advanced to third on an error, and advanced to home plate after another error.

Chemeketa managed to score a run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a single by Chemeketa’s Biddinger. With the score at 2-1, the Roadrunners ended up putting the game away after Durham Sundberg was walked to first and then scored after an error.

For the game, LB capitalized on Chemeketa’s 4 errors, only committing 2 of their own. They managed 6 hits and fanned 8 of the Storm’s batters. All three of the runs for the Beaks were RBI.

Cole Cramer had 2 hits, and Daniel Pruitt had two RBI, while Brady Baltus threw 5 strikeouts on 7 1/3 innings pitched with 6 hits allowed.

The second game was much closer, though LB had the lead early. Immediately after Tyler Pfeifer singled in the top of the third, he was propelled to third base when Cole Cramer singled as well. Pfeifer then scored after a hit by Aidan Dougherty. LB scored a second run when Nelson grounded out and allowed Cramer to reach the plate.

The Storm tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning before scoring the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh. LB was not able to respond and take the lead again. The Beaks’ error was too much to overcome with Chemeketa not committing any errors in the second game.

Cramer had 2 hits in the second game as well, while Dougherty and Nelson each had an RBI. Kadn Miller pitched 4 innings and allowed 3 hits and 2 runs while fanning one batter. 

Overall, it was a successful week for the baseball team, improving their record from 15-11 to 20-12. They moved up to second in the NWAC South standings and now have the fourth-best record in the league overall, measured by winning percentage.

The Roadrunner’s next outing is a doubleheader at Umpqua Community College, starting at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 20.

Journalism for Spring 2023 in Review

I was able to meet almost all of my goals for this term and progress my abilities in news writing significantly. My greatest accomplishment for the year, and not only the term, was my sports article format. My writing also became more concise as I was able to break large paragraphs into smaller ones as a habit. This allowed me to develop a precision in directing my storytelling that allowed me to explain multiple concepts successively.
