Men's Basketball Team Punches Playoff ticket with Win Over Southwestern Oregon

ALBANY – The LBCC Men’s Basketball defeated the Southwestern Oregon Community College Lakers on Wednesday, March 1 and punched their tickets to the NWAC playoffs.

Teetering on the verge of elimination, they began the contest with a 14-14 record, including 9 wins and 6 losses in conference play. The Roadrunners ran away in the second half after playing a close first half that saw the teams trade the lead 8 times.

In the first half, the Roadrunners played almost flawless team basketball, with two players scoring 5 points and three players scoring 6 points. Ayden Foster has 6 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. The Roadrunners went 11 of 36 on shot attempts, making 5 of 15 three-point tries, while pulling down 28 rebounds. This compared favorably to the Lakers’ 21 rebounds, 10 of 34 shooting and 2 of 14 makes on three point field goals.

After the break, the Men shored up their defense and began to connect on shots that they could not make in the first half. Shooting a blistering 62.5% from the field in the second half, the Beaks made 20-32 shot attempts, including 3 of 9 three-point shots. They outrebounded the Lakers 21 to 12 in the second half and the Roadrunners committed only 1 turnover in the second half.

The star of the game was TJ Zimmerman, who scored a double-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Ayden Foster also double-doubled with 20 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 steal. The team went 31 of 68 from the field, making 8 of 24 three-point tries and a stellar 14 of 15 free throws. Their greatest advantage, however, may have been in rebounds, where they outperformed the Lakers by pulling down 52 rebounds to the Lakers’ 35. Tyson Parker also added 13 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block.

Effective transitions, plenty of passing, and getting the jump on the boards was critical to outscoring the Lakers’ in the second half.

In a post-game interview TJ Zimmerman was asked about what he thought about the team’s performance. He cited transitions and shooting the ball with great efficiency in the second half. “I thought we ran out offense really well; they played some most of the game and we played our sets really well. We played well in transition and we got our stops to get us going.”

It was a game that the Beaks will surely hope to emulate in the NWAC tournament, representing Linn-Benton with precision and pride.
