Lady Roadrunners End Season with Victory Over Southwestern Oregon

 



ALBANY – The LBCC Women’s Basketball defeated the Southwestern Oregon Community College Lakers on Wednesday, March 1.

The Lady Roadrunners entered the game with a 21-6 record, including 10-5 in conference play. In a game that was dominant from start to finish, LB never trailed in the game, only being tied once at 11-11.

After what was a close first quarter, the Roadrunners began to pull away, as Kathleen Hale had 6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block while Ruby Krebs had 8 points and 2 assists. In the first half the Beaks played stiff defense, holding the Lakers to 6 of 24 shooting. They also collected 8 turnovers.

In the second half of the contest is where the Roadrunners began to pull away, outsourcing SWOCC 28 to 14. The Lakers went 0 for 7 on three point attempts in the second half while committing 8 turnovers. The team distributed the ball well in the third quarter, with Sabrina Albee, Ruby Krebs and Jayden Ray each scoring 3 points.

The Beaks extended their lead and put away the Lakers for good in the fourth quarter, with Brooklyn Hankwitz throwing down 8 points. For the game, Hankwitz had an incredible 18 rebounds, 10 points, 2 assists, 6 steals, and 2 blocks. Jayden Ray also had 7 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal in the second half. The team’s transitions were excellent, and their passing was effective, delivering buckets and assists as well throughout the contest.

For the game, the Roadrunners made 18 of 58 shot attempts while holding the Lakers to 12 of 51 shooting. From three-point range, SWOCC made only 1 of 14 attempts while the Roadrunners netted 5 of 15. Rebounding was the great difference in the game, with LB nabbing 49 rebounds to the Lakers’ 34. In addition to this, the beaks dished out 14 assists to SWOCC’s 5.

After the game, guard Muriel Jones-Hoisington was interviewed about the performance of the team. When she was asked why the team played so well, she provided the following quote: “It's tough to say, because basketball is a game of ups and downs and I thought that we came really prepared. We are a determined team and we're all buying into the program.”

Ruby Krebs and Brooklyn Hankwitz were the Roadrunner’s leading scorers for the game with 12 points each, and Madison Dutkiewicz had 11 rebounds and one steal. Sabrina Albee also had 5 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 block.

In a game that serves as the perfect performance to propel the Roadrunners into the NWAC playoffs, the Lady Roadrunners like their chances in the tournament and will hope to bring their best performances of the season against their opponents and take home the trophy.

Journalism for Spring 2023 in Review

I was able to meet almost all of my goals for this term and progress my abilities in news writing significantly. My greatest accomplishment for the year, and not only the term, was my sports article format. My writing also became more concise as I was able to break large paragraphs into smaller ones as a habit. This allowed me to develop a precision in directing my storytelling that allowed me to explain multiple concepts successively. My improvement of nut graph, leads, and captivating intros was certainly developed along this term, and I strongly feel that much of my writing now competes at a professional level.  Goals from the Beginning of the Term: "I think that my first goal for the term is to create a format for my research summary pieces, because I love to read peer-reviewed journals and present the information from them in a simple format that is easy for persons to understand who have a limited education in the topic at hand."
