On Campus

Misaki Yonemura (left), Student Engagement Leader, and Audrey Moyo, Student Leadership Council Office Secretary take part in an office meeting to plan the LBCC food drive on Wednesday, November 2. The photo takes place after a meeting to organize and discuss a food drive and captures the two leadership council members amid laughter. The food drive aims to attract several dozen donors in the hopes of alleviating food scarcity for Thanksgiving and the holidays. Misaki said that she hopes to collect more than 100 pounds of food while Audrey supported the same notion. The meeting also was a discussion of upcoming events, including friends Friday where students from around campus gather to participate in events like air hockey while meeting and greeting one another in the hopes of forming long-lasting relationships. The group, which has more than 10 members, organizes and holds many of the student events on campus, including the student elections, which take place once a year. Almost every member of the council is in their second year of participation, building upon leadership experience to create a friendlier, more successful student body for the generation of leaders that succeeds them.

Mary, a member of the Peer Empowerment Club poses for a photo while the group discusses elements of success in the school setting. The goal of the club is to provide students at LBCC the opportunity to talk about their struggles and triumphs at the college with respect to the obstacles and opportunities that they encounter in their studies. While Mary discussed her love of poetry and her difficulties in getting herself to study for classes, she commented that she was glad to have the group to listen to her; having applied some of the other members' lessons in the form of making a study sheet that listed all of her assignments for the week, Mary said that she had gained from the club. Other members discussed their difficulties in staying focused on their school work in addition to sometimes spending hours working on assignments and still not having enough time to complete them. Chris Riseley, the director of the group, shared his story about how teaching creates a stressful environment in wanting all of his students to succeed yet is countered by the opportunities for moments of success in the form of watching students complete the scriptwriting class he teaches. The club, which meets on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. has about seven members, all of whom have participated for the entire term. The group is always looking to add more members and more information can be found on the Linn-Benton website at the link below:

Number four, Zaley Bennett serves against the Clark College Penguins on Wednesday, November 2. In a match that was dominated by the Roadrunners, Bennett contributed to the victory in the form of four service aces. In the team's penultimate game before the playoffs, the match was not overlooked by the roadrunners in their quest to collect a second consecutive conference title in the NWAC. Having not lost a set in their previous three matches, Linn Benton continued this streak with a 3-0 victory over Clark College setting them up for  the final game of the season against Lane Community College on Friday, November 4. Coach Jayme Frazier called it “an important victory,” in the team’s quest to repeat, while emphasizing that even with a 28-1 record, the Roadrunners’ final match could not be overlooked. Frazier further commented that the key to the team's success moving into the playoffs would be cheering for one another and continuing to focus on execution and excellence in their return game while moving past mistakes and bringing their attention to the next point. The team, excited with the win, were determined to focus on their final game and forget their record before moving their attention to the playoffs. More information on the win can be found below:
