Photographer of the Week - Stephen Wilkes

My photographer's name is Stephen Wilkes. Hailing from New York, he graduated from Syracuse in 1980 and opened his personal studio in 1983. What stands out to me about Wilkes photos is the day/night exposure. It serves to create a juxtaposition of day life and night life, not only illuminating the differences between day and night behavior, but also in how nature differs as well. We can see how flowers are open during the day and closed at night, while simultaneously witnessing how trees largely appear the same. Wilkes claim-to-fame is likely the day/night exposure effects. I do not recall seeing broad landscape photos which capture day and night in the same frame before. Three Facts about Stephen Wilkes Fact #1 His work has been featured in eight museums, including the National Geographic Museum. Fact #2 His work specializes in cityscapes, landscapes and day/night exposure. This creates images which depict life over multiple timeframes in one photograph. Fact #3 In 2000, he was commissioned by Epson America to create a project depicting the United States in the year 2000, titled America in Detail. Fact #4 He documented the damages of Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy in multiple projects to highlight the suffering of victims and bring attention to projects to aid them.
